Becky,
Thanks for setting this blog up! I love good reading recommendations! I am jealous that you guys are all getting together, both because it would be great fun and I like Sevy's! I will throw in a tid bit or two on the blog as new things come up in employment law that some of you might find helpful in your business life. The US Supreme Court came out with a good ruling today that narrows the window for when an employee can sue for discriminatory pay practices. See Ledbetter vs. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, USSC Slip Opinion, No. 05-1074. If you are in HR or run your own company and it is large enough to be covered by the Equal Pay Act or Title VII, this is a good case. We will probably have something posted in our law firm website about the case in the next day or so (see www.Ogletreedeakins.com ). This is also a good source of some free legal updates for around the country. That is not a shameless endorsement either as it does not profit me :) ).
Hope you all have a grand summer.

HI All
Thanks, Becky for getting us set up!

I'm looking forward to some good reading recommendations from everyone.

One of my current favorites is re-reading Farenheit 451 (not since jr. high!). It's a good one to read aloud, with someone else, then discuss. There's some amazing foresight about today's culture, and very poetic descriptions I was way too cool to notice the first time I read it!

Also, if you want some great, laugh-out-loud, twisted humor, I recommend Carl Hiassen. My current read is Nature Girl. He's also written Sick Puppy, Basket Case and Skinny Dip. All excellent reading. I also enjoy his vivid descriptions of some very odd characters.

OK - who's next? Hope to hear from you all soon. I think I'll put on some sunscreen and head for the lake. Take care! mbp

I recently returned from a 3 week getaway in Mexico (partial solution for taking care of myself as promised the last day of LA-Annie) where I only worked on a tan. Haven't had one in 15 years. I know,I know it'll cause wrinkles but this one time it's worth it.

My sister reports that my entire personality has changed. That can't be totally true but I do feel much more laid back...if a type AAA can be laid back.

Lying in that sun I did get in gobs of reading. Two novels that I ckd out of the library were so mindless I've already forgotten the names of them. However, per a recommendation from one of the speakers @ our Dallas meeting I read "The Wisdom of Crowds" and found it quite surprising, humbling, and intriguing. It was certainly worth my time. I even bought an extra copy for a friend. I'm gonna do a little further research on the subject myself but it makes a group like LA quite valuable if you can employ them in the right conversations.
I also listened to a hours and hours of CDs I got from Harvard on Spirituality and Medicine symposium. They reinforce and support with quantified research what you already well know.
Presently I'm reading "Between Two Worlds", an autobiography by Zainab Salbi whose father was the personal "friend" and pilot of Saddam Hussein. They were scared to death full time. Fear as motivation leads to major dysfunction. Saddam was obviously a raging narcissist and maniac who controlled a nation that hated him for 35 years. How can that be?????? I love America!
And Isaiah. I love Isaiah. Not a particularl happy read but full of hope.

Hi All
Can I say that I'm terribly envious of Gwen's fabulous vacation!? I have had NO time for reading the past few weeks. It is just too crazy.

Send good thoughts my way. I think we're moving into the new house by the end of the week. A walk-through is scheduled for tomorrow. Finger crossed and hands folded! I am soooo ready to move out of the hotel.

How many have signed up for the wine tasting tour in August? If you haven't seen Sideways, you should probably see it before. Merlot, anyone? Or not.

Looking forward to seeing you all soon! mbp
