Great job, Becky! This is the first time I've blogged. Thanks for getting me started.
Sorry I missed Sevy's -- and am looking forward to seeing everybody in San Francisco.
I just finished reading Enough! by Juan Williams. It's all about Bill Cosby's controversial remarks about poor and disadvantaged people taking responsibility for derogatory language, dysfunctional family dynamics and working to take advantage of educational and other opportunities provided by the civil rights gains of the 50s and 60s. It clarifies the position of self-proclaimed black leaders and the schisms in the community as a whole.
In the spiritual column, I'm reading The Masters and the Path by C.W. Leadbeater about the existence of Ascended Masters -- the Catholic Church would call them saints -- and how to become a student of one and ultimately, become one. Provocative!
And, for escapism. . .I can't remember. However, a good non-fiction novel that I'd love to loan to someone is They Spy Who Wore Red: My Adventures as an Undercover Agent in WWII by Aline, Countess of Romanones.

Yea!!!! I got back in. It took multiple tried, but here I am. I just sent Candace an e-mail because my daughter and I went to a Giants game while in SF and the announcer was a WOMAN! I loved it! It was the cherry on top of an already delicious sundae that we were served while in SF. Kind of makes you wonder what men in SF do for a living :)
What a fabulous session we had. It sure is going to make Washington and the end of our program come all too soon. You have all taught me or reminded me of a lot of very important things in life that will have a positive impact on me for a very long time.
Reflecting back to Dallas and our discussions of the immigration issue. For those of you in Human Resources or related matters, you may want to look at our recent e-alert discussing the new changes when an employees Social Security information does not match up. Significant implications to employers!
I hope you all had decent trips home. I had triplets who were about three years old, very active, and NOT at all happy to be on an airplane very late at night. I kept reminding myself that I was once a young mother flying with children and just turned up the volume on my iPod!

I, too, had a fabulous time. I am back in Topeka recharged and ready to whip somebody or something (or maybe myself!) into shape.
I am so inspired by every one of you. What an amazing group of women. And for those of you who brought your daughters to some of our events, I say "you go, girl!" What an example you're setting for them. (Remember, they will have to take care of us when we're 100!)

I hope this message finds everyone well and in good spirits.
I am safely back in Dallas after driving the terribly twisty, curvy, wheel clenching HWY 1 on the California coast from San Francisco to Santa Barbara. It’s about an 80 mile road and the speed limit was 30 mph most of the way. Yup, I thought I was never going to make it out. The light at the end of the tunnel was seeing my best friend and the beautiful Santa Barbara wine country.
Usually when I take a road trip by myself I always bring a long a recorder so I can document ideas or quotes or just talk to myself. So on my drive down the coast I used up 3 mini tapes, just on Leadership America and everything I learned.
Since I've been back at the office I've done a full inspection of our offices and targeted many places for us to go 'green.' I've also suggested we do a 'Green' Issue next year for the magazine. The issue would highlight companies like Brenda Harrison's, Texas Instruments, who are now building green facilities. We will focus on small businesses that supplier all green materials. I am really really excited about this.
Also, I wanted to let all of you know that our very own Wanda Brice, was awarded the very prestigious Athena Award in Dallas Texas. It’s a real honor and she rightly deserves it. Go here to read the press release.

Hi all. I had my other bunion surgery Aug. 16 so hopefully I will be ready to "run with the pack" in D.C. I am looking forward to that trip but want don't want it to come too soon. I am sure you know what I mean. Betty Flores

When Becky Powell and I went to visit Rep EBJ, we actual got to meet with her senior assistant for the environmental area, Joye Purser,PH.D.
After we told her all about Biomimicry she asked about Leadership America. When finding out who we are, she asked if we would support a bill EBJ has sponsored concerning gender bias in the sciences.

It is titled "To authorize workshops to eliminate gender bias for women in careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, and for other purposes. " Also know as Gender Bias Elimination Act of 2007, the bill is cosponsored by Rep Ruben Hinajosa. The research has shown among other things that it is not lack of talent, but unintentional biases and outmoded institutional structures that are hindering the access and advancement of women. So the bill provides for funding for The Director of the National Institutes of Health, the Secretary of Energy, the Director of National Science Foundation, the Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration to carry out a program, in cooperation with scientific and professional societies and organizations, to host mandatory national meetings that educate members of review panels, university department chairs and agency program officers about methods that minimize the effects of gender bias in evaluation. About $6 million. It has been referred to Committee on Education and Labor, and in addition to the Committees on Science and Technology, and Armed Services.
